John Stevens Henslow (1796 - 1861) held the title of Professor of Botany at the University of Cambridge for 36 years. Of his many achievements during this time, probably the best known are securing his student and protégé Charles Darwin's place upon the H.M.S. Beagle, and establishing Cambridge University Botanic Garden at it's current beautiful site. Tayloria, depicting a species of moss in microscopic detail, comes from a series of teaching charts that Henslow prepared to illustrate his popular botany lectures. An extensive collection of these astonishing charts, along with microscopes that belonged to the Professor, are held in the Whipple Museum of the History of Science.
