Darwin's Beetle - Enamel brooch
Enamel brooch featuring the Crucifix ground beetle (Panagaeus cruxmajor)
While a student at Cambridge University, Charles Darwin often spent time collecting beetles in the Cambridge countryside rather than attending lectures. One day, he spotted the sought-after Crucifix ground beetle - the only problem was, he had a beetle in each hand already! So he popped one of those in his mouth and picked up the ground beetle. But the carabid beetle in his mouth squirted out an acrid liquid and in his surprise Darwin ended up losing all three. This brooch is inspired by this story of misadventure, with the backing card representing Darwin's beetle box, now in the collection of the Museum of Zoology in Cambridge.Â
Discover a unique collection of gifts and souvenirs from our exclusive collaboration with London-based illustrator Mirri Rowland. Drawn to Nature and the Museum of Zoology have developed a range celebrating highlights from the museum, including Darwin’s beetle box, specimens from the Beagle voyage, and exhibits from the taxidermy displays. Each item is thoughtfully designed and crafted, bringing the collection together with Mirri’s passion for science and nature.
